Iowa City man has 13-hour standoff with police

The Iowa City Police arrested a man yesterday after a 13-hour standoff with him, according to a recent article.

Police originally responded to a call for a domestic dispute at the home of 52-year-old Troy Perkins.

When officers arrived on the scene, the female victim, age 38, was able to be contacted. She told police that Perkins had punched her and pointed a handgun at her, threatening to kill her. She was able to get out of the house without being shot.

Information in the police statements say that the altercation began after the couple had been having sex. Perkins began to choke the victim and held a handgun to her head, telling her he would kill her. After he put the handgun away, he punched her several times in the ribs.

The victim told police that she believed she was going to die and she was afraid.

Perkins refused to leave his house to be placed under arrest for a total of 13 hours. The victim was not the only individual in the house at the time of the incident. Reports state that an 8-year-old and a bed-ridden elderly woman were also in the house at the time.

The area was secured by Iowa City's Special Response Team and the Crisis Negotiations Team attempted to maintain contact with Perkins on telephone as long as possible.

Perkins hung up the phone around 1:30 a.m., but police were not able to enter the home without any individuals in the home being harmed and arrest him at a little after 8 a.m. Saturday morning.

Perkins faces a long list of charges for the incident: harassment, assault with display of a weapon, and a variety of others, which include many felonies.

Upon the arrest, police determined that Perkins also had three outstanding warrants from previous incidents.
