Driver rolls van in downtown Iowa City

Drivers in Iowa City a little before 4 p.m. witnessed an unusual accident downtown on Dubuque St. A van rolled over with 5 people in it, and responders had to work to remove the people from the van safely.

Investigations after the victims were rescued discovered that the cause of the van rolling over was because the driver had a seizure and drove into a utility pole, knocking it down and flipping over the van.

According to an article posted on kcrg.com, a van ramped a telephone pole and flipped over, downing power lines all around it. Witnesses stated that the noise of the power lines being ripped down could be heard for blocks.

Five people were trapped inside the van, and the street was closed down because of the crash while the victims were removed from the van and the power lines were removed from the ground and restored.

Responders worked carefully to rescue the people inside the van. All of individuals were taken to Mercy Hospital for treatment, but all injuries were minor. Reports state that everyone in the vehicle is okay.

Reports also state that the cause of the accident was a seizure experienced by the driver. Causes and further information have not been released about the seizures or about the individuals that were in the accident.

The crash knocked out into the evening because of down power lines. A total of 33 people were affected by the outage for the entirety of the day. Power was eventually restored to them.
