Man arrested for standing in his driveway with a handgun

The Iowa City Police Department arrested a man Thursday after he was reported to be standing in his driveway with a handgun. He was found to be severely intoxicated and taken into custody by the Iowa City Police Department.

Police responded to a call Thursday night a little before 8 p.m. on a call of a man standing in his driveway with a handgun. According to the complaint, he appeared to be drunk and was wandering around with the gun. He had wandered into the street a few times, but was standing in his driveway.

Upon arrival, police found 48-year-old Francis Granger was holding a handgun and immediately ran inside his home to get away from the police.

The Iowa City police surrounded his home, expecting to enter the home. He returned a few moments later with a can of beer instead of the handgun. Police ordered him to the ground immediately and was placed under arrest.

Investigation of Granger showed that he was obviously intoxicated. He smelled strongly of alcohol and displayed many signs of being intoxicated. Breath tests revealed a blood-alcohol level of .286 percent, which is well over the legal limit to operate a vehicle.

Granger was arrested on a single charge of public intoxication.

This is not the first public intoxication charge for Granger. He has two previous arrests for the same charge: April of last year and October of 2011.

No information was released about the handgun and no related charges were filed for its possession.
