Stop Big Brother to hold anti-surveillance event

Iowa City's Stop Big Brother organization was to hold an anti-surveillance event Saturday, and they were even supposed to fly a drone at  the event in order to gain signatures on a petition against red light and speed cameras in Iowa City.

For quite a time now, the Stop Big Brother organization has been campaigning to get Iowa City to outlaw red light and speed cameras at the city's stoplights. They have also been trying to get the city to outlaw drones.

So far, the City Council has made no moves to remove any of the cameras or stop using the drones. Stop Big Brother has been persistent, though, and has decided on an attempt to get a petition against the cameras.

In order to get the city council to bring the matter to the city's registered voters to get the cameras outlawed, the Stop Big Brother organization had to get enough signatures on a petition.

In order to get the required amount of registered voters to sign, Iowa City decided to hold a signature drive Saturday, April 20.

According to an article on thegazette.com, the organization was to fly a surveillance drone at the event.

The event was to be held at College Green Park in Iowa City from 1 - 5 p.m.

The petition to allow city voters to have a part in the decision on the stoplight cameras had 2,106 valid signatures before the event was held. It was held in order to get the necessary amount in order to have a total of 2,500 signatures.
