UI Softball to Host "Awareness Day"

This weekend will be a very big day for the powerful University of Iowa softball team as they will host an "Awareness Day" this coming Saturday.

The event is focused on raising awareness of issues within the community, with the help of organizations that the team has been working with throughout the year.

Members of the team divided into groups earlier in the year and began to work with various organizations in order to give back to the community. The team has helped a total of eight organizations in the community.

The Hawkeye Sports website has listed the organizations groups of players have been working with throughout the season.

Senior Sam Valentine has been working with a group to help raise Autism awareness, along with Shayla Starkenburg. Senior Chelsea Lynn has been working with the Iowa City Animal Shelter. Megan Blank and Sammi Gyerman have been working in a group with her.

Kayla Massey and Holly Hoffman form a pitcher-catcher duo on the field, and a duo off the field working in Veteran's Hospital. Nikki Gentile and Whitney Repole have been working together on Miracles in Motion.

Steviee Grove, Micaela Whitney, and Johnnie Dowling paired with the Ronald McDonald House. Brianna Luna, Haley Hansel, and Mallorree Grove  have teamed up to work with the Iowa City Hospice.

Krystal Shirrell, Ashley Akers, and Brittanee Grove have spent the season working with the Domestic Violence Intervention Program. Michelle Zoeller, Erink Erickson and Tor Hawley have been working with the Juvenile Diabetes Reserach Foundation.

The event will take place on the University of Iowa Field when the University hosts Nebraska.
