Iowa City joins the marriage equality movement

Recently all over the United States, the talk has been about marriage equality. Now, Johnson County and Iowa City have decided to play a part in that discussion as Johnson County officials voted on their position in the discussion.

The talk all over the United States recently was the United State Supreme Court's decision to hear arguments regarding same sex marriages all over the nation. The rulings over the two arguments heard could not only impact their own interests, but the entire nation, even Iowa, where gay marriage is legal.

One of the cases heard involves the Defense of Marriage Act. If the Supreme Court rules against the federal gay marriage ban, then Iowa's own legal gay marriages could become illegal.

Johnson County voted 4-1 Thursday to help urge officials to join the discussion and urge the Supreme Court to overthrow anti-gay marriage laws. John Etheredge is the only Republican serving on the board and the only one who voted against the proclamation.

This vote allows the board to sign and send a document stating that Johnson County supports the overthrow of anti-gay marriage laws in the United States.

County Board chairwoman Janelle Rettig has personal interests in this as her own gay marriage was recognized in 2009 when Iowa overthrew the state gay marriage bans.

This is not the first stance supporting marriage equality that Johnson County has taken, and it is far from the last. They have been supporting equal rights since as early as the late 1970s.
