Iowa City woman takes everyone to the prom

An Iowa City woman has taken it upon herself to begin a program making sure everyone has the chance to go to the prom, even if they cannot readily afford to buy a brand new dress or rent a tuxedo to go.

Prom is not cheap for anyone to attend. Even if you skip out on the customary pre-prom dinner with your date and do your own hair and make-up if you are a young lady, the money will still pile up rapidly. With the tough times, many young people have to skip on the prom because they cannot afford it.

Jen Jordan of Iowa City, though, looks to change this. She has taken a cue from other secondhand clothing programs created in Iowa City and started her own, targeted specifically toward the prom.

The program, called "Project Prom," will operate out of the East Side Recycling Center in Iowa City. Donations of unused prom clothing and accessories will be accepted and given to those in need of prom attire, free of charge.

Even though the program is Jordan's idea, she will not have the time to work on it herself. The task has been taken on by Mary Palmberg instead, who already runs several similar programs on her own.

Both Palmberg and Jordan are in agreement in their sentiments about this sort of programs.

Both Palmberg and Jordan are excited to bring about a program where people will give away unused items they do not need to benefit those that do. They recognize the impact on the people and the economy that programs such as this will have.
