Medical marijuana is being proposed to Iowa City in the upcoming legislation sessions with the help of an Iowa senator.
Senator Joe Bolkcom and three other senators are together sponsoring a bill in this year's legislation to initiate the reclassification of marijuana and allow medical marijuana to be decriminalized.
According to the bill, the medical marijuana distribution would be controlled the same way as any other prescription drug, and possession of it would be criminalized like any other prescription drug.
The bill will take marijuana from a Schedule I substance to a Schedule II substance. It will no longer be the among the most tightly regulated drugs on the market. Instead, it will be a Schedule II substance, allowed to be prescribed as a medication to certain patients.
According to statistics, 58% of Iowans favor the legalization plan that would allow medical marijuana to be prescribed.
The decision, unfortunately, is not with the public, though. According to Bolkcom, the support of the Senate may not be as much as that of the public. He believes that it may be a bit of a battle in the Senate to get the legislation passed.
This is partially because of the stigma attached to marijuana.
Iowa would be the 19th state to legalize medical marijuana. 18 states and Washington, D.C. have all decriminalized medical marijuana under specified conditions.
This is not the first bill in Iowa City to propose medical marijuana. The House proposed a similar bill recently, but it did not pass last month. Bolkcom does not expect it to pass this time around, but he states that he will continue to push for the reclassification.
