The Iowa City Police Department recently had a very unusual experience that led to the arrest of an Iowa City woman.
Police recently reported that they witnessed a young child playing with a crack rock while they questioned a woman in Iowa City.
Wednesday evening at around 7 p.m., the Iowa City Police Department responded to a 911 call from a child. The police reports did not say why the child actually dialed 911 in the first place, but what police found at the residence was not normal.
The resident of the home and mother of the child was 25-year-old Tiffany S. Johnson.
Upon questioning about the 911 call, Johnson acknowledged that she left her children home alone to go to Kmart. The children are 3, 4, and 7 years old.
Unusually, though, while the police were talking to Johnson about the incident, they were also watching as one of her children was playing with a crack rock.
When asked, Johnson, according to police reports, admitted that she sells crack and was storing it in a can in her bedroom. This led police to gain permission to search the apartment.
The search turned up 12 grams of crack that was, in fact, ready to be sold, confirming Johnson's confession.
Johnson was arrested after the search and taken to the Johnson County Jail. The children were removed from her home by the Department of Human Services.
Johnson remains lodged in jail with a bond set at $25,000. She faces a list of charges: controlled substance violation and Iowa drug tax stamp violation, both felonies; using a residence to sell or store controlled substances and child endangerment without injury, both misdemeanors.
