Good-Bye UI Master of Arts

The Master of Arts program at the University of Iowa may not be around for much longer, according to a recent announcement.

Not even half a decade after the creation of the Master of Arts program at the University of Iowa, Dean Downing Thomas is looking to put an end to the program.

According to the Dean, the Master of Arts program has not generated the amount of qualified interest that was anticipated when the program was first created.

In addition, the location of program was moved in 201 to a different building and it has created more extensive problems for it since.

There have only been about 9 to 13 applicants for the Master of Arts program each year, but most of the applicants each year have not been qualified for the program. The goal was for around 5 students to be accepted each year, but it took until 2012 for even 4 students to be accepted each year. Just this year, the goal of 5 has been reached.

Only 4 students have been graduated from the program as of yet.

As a result, Thomas suggested that the program be eliminated from the college. The Master of Arts would instead be transferred to the Graduate College's Interdisciplinary Studies program.

Not everyone supports the dean's request, though. Some of the students in the program will be very sad to see the Master of Arts program go.

The Graduate College faculty will consider shutting down the Master of Arts program at a meeting.
