Mother in Drunk Toddler Case Gets Probation

The Iowa City mother accused of allowing her toddler to drink alcohol and become drunk has been sentenced and will not serve any more time in jail.

27-year-old Natasha Kriener will not be serving any more time in the case where she has been charged with allowing her child to drink alcohol. She was sentenced Monday.

In February, Kriener was arrested originally after the father of her child picked up her 23-month-old and realized that he was acting strange. He was crying and seemed to have trouble with balance. Upon taking him to the hospital, the father discovered that the child had a blood alcohol level of .097.

Kriener was interviewed, and it was discovered that she was highly intoxicated as well, showing a blood alcohol content of .251. She was placed under arrest for allowing her child to become intoxicated and charged with felony child abuse or neglect.

She was originally supposed to go on trial for the crime in September, but she did not show up for her trial and was arrested again on November 1. Kriener pleaded guilty in November on the felony neglect charge for the incident and was sentenced on Monday.

The resulting decision was a suspended prison sentence of up to 10 years and time served for the 104 days she has already served. She will remain free on probation for three years unless she violates its terms.

If Kriener does not violate her probation in any way during her probation period, she will no longer have the felony child neglect charge received for the incident. If she does violate her probation, she would return to jail.

The judge approved of the deferred sentence for Kriener because of her minimal criminal history.
