French Fries Started Iowa City Fire

Investigations into the cause of the recent fire that erupted in the back of an apartment building and destroyed a dental lab Tuesday have returned results that the fire was in fact a kitchen fire.

A fire recently broke Tuesday evening at a little before 8:30 p.m. out in an apartment building and spread to the attached Dental Lab, causing an extensive amount of damage in the lab and the apartments.

The building and the apartments are both beyond repair due to the damage from the flames.

34 firefighters took well over an hour to put out the flames. A bus was brought to the scene to allow the firefighters to get water and take a break during the very long battle to extinguish the flames.

In the original report, it was stated that the cause of the blaze was a kitchen fire in one of the apartments. This was in fact a correct original statement, and details of the actual cause have now been released upon the close of the investigation.

Results of the investigation were discovered on Thursday. The fire was in fact started in the kitchen of one of the apartments attached to the dental lab.

A pot of oil that was used to make French fries was left unattended on a flame by a woman in the apartment who fell asleep. The oil started the flames in her apartment and spread through it to the dental lab.

Nobody was injured in the fire. The residents in the apartments managed to leave safely.
