No Sleeping at the Library

The Iowa City Library Board of Trustees has recently made an unusual rule. The results of a recent board meeting ruling, it has decided that there will no longer be sleeping allowed in the library or on the grounds.

At a board meeting Thursday evening the Iowa City Library Board reached a 6-1 vote to ban sleeping from the library, as stated in a recent post on kcrg.com.

Allegedly, the rule is in response to many complaints about people sleeping at the library. Sleeping is a misuse of the library's resources, according to arguments made by supporters of the rule at the meeting.

The decision did include an exemption, though. Children with caregivers or parents are exempt from this rule. This is the only sleeping allowance, according to the rule.

The main opposition to the rule states that the rule is aimed at homeless people in the area who are just looking for a place to sleep, claiming it is fascist and cold to those people.

The board denies this claim, stating that other businesses have the same rule already, and it is following suit. Buildings such as the courthouse do not have people sleeping on the grounds.

Opposition insists that sleeping should not be banned because it is not necessarily a deviant behavior, even though it may not necessarily be a proper use of the resources as intended.

The rule will be implemented immediately, but it will take a little time to enforce and get the people to follow it.
