Iowa City to Go Ahead with Diversity Policy

The Iowa City School Board has decided to move forward with a diversity policy change that has become very controversial with those that are part of the community affected by the change, according to an article on radioiowa.com

The Iowa City School Board held a session Tuesday to discuss a diversity policy that was recently suggested for Iowa City Schools and has since been the center of much debate with the school board, school staff, and community.

The debate was very heated. In fact, it was so heated that some comments by members of the board and community members even drew boos and were stated as being offensive. Both sides argued their parts with a lot of emotion.

The opinions on the voting were split. Supporters support the school board's attempt to address diversity issues within the school. Those that oppose it are against the change that the new policy will bring.

Part of the policy would include a mandatory regulation of the amount of students going to a particular school receiving reduced and free priced lunches. This involves an extensive amount of changes from the top at the board all the way down to individual students and their families.

The vote was taken and the result was a four to three vote to go on with the recently proposed diversity policy change. It was close, but it did pass the second voting of three. There is one more voting that has to be passed in order for the policy change to go into effect.
