Iowa City Police Department Gives Awards

Every year, the Iowa City Police Department holds a ceremony where it presents its annual departmental awards. This year, the Richard W. "Dick" Lee Award and the Officer of the Year award were presented to two officers of the Iowa City P.D.

Police Chief Sam Hargadine presented two awards for 2012 to two members of the police department.

The Richard W. "Dick" Lee Award is presented annually in honor of former police Captain Dick Lee. He retired on July 16, 1982, according to an article on the Iowa City Patch website. Captain Lee embodied professionalism and compassion, as well as a long list of career accomplishments. The officer presented with the award displays these qualities as well.

This year, Officer Mebus was presented with the award. He has been with the Iowa Police Department for nearly 12 years and displays a willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty. He is part of the Crisis Negotiation Team and part of the Patrol Division.

The Officer of the Year is a very important award given to an officer that displays both ethics and great work ethic very well. There are many qualities that are part of receiving this award, including good personal conduct.

Officer Alex Stricker was given this award at the awards ceremony. He has been a member of the police department for three years and has since displayed exceptional qualities that meet the criteria of Officer of the Year.

Stricker is part of the Patrol Division as well as part of the Special Response Team and a Crime Scene Technician.

The ceremony was held at the City Hall January 14 of this year. It was an informal ceremony.
