Iowa City Sets First Date for Diversity Voting

The Iowa City School Board has made its first step of progress toward voting on a controversial policy change that is has been considering recently.

The Iowa City School Board halted its progress on the voting for a new diversity policy it had been considering when the community began to speak out against it. The Iowa City Education Association Executive Board and Building Representative Council even got involved, asking the school board to delay the vote.

Instead of continuing the vote, the school board scheduled a meeting to allow a time to listen to the community on the policy.

The board was originally scheduled to vote Saturday during a meeting from 9 to 11 a.m. at the school district building. They changed this time to a meeting where they will hear the public speak about the policy.

The first voting has been moved back to a January 15 meeting. An emergency meeting to get in a vote on the policy was not able to happen, so Jan. 15 will be the first time it will happen.

It is unclear if the board will decide to schedule another meeting after the voting takes place on January 15. If it is to occur, it will have to be scheduled before Feb. 5 due to funding requirements.

A draft of the full diversity policy proposal is not available to the public because changes are still being made to the draft. It is expected to be released to the public when it has been finalized.
