University of Iowa Hires a Lawyer

The University of Iowa is hiring a lawyer to fight allegations of two officials that have been accused of making death threats against a former professor that was fired from the University of Iowa earlier this year, according to an article posted on the Miami Herald website.

Malik Juweid was formerly an employee of the University of Iowa. He was fired in August and returned to Jordan, the nation he was from.

Juweid is alleging that the former UI medical school dean and associate dean, Paul Rothman and Lois Geist, made death threats against him during a cell phone call.

Allegedly, the two men warned Juweid never to come back the United States to pursue the original lawsuit he filed against them in the United States, telling him that they could have him killed. This spurred the lawsuit in Jordan.

The trial is held in Jordan, and the two were facing a hearing Sunday there. They will not be attending since the UI lawyer will be challenging the case. According to a spokesman, the lawyer will be fighting whether or not the two men can even be tried in Jordan, as neither have ever been there.

The University of Iowa believes that this professor is only seeking revenge for being terminated from his position, stating that they are baseless and Juweid has been known for this type of harassment.

They also state that the lawsuit may have been filed in response to one that was filed against Juweid because of an alleged threatening phone call he made to Geist, which he denies. It has been stated that this phone call was recorded.

He was fired for sending harassing emails to colleagues and band from the UI campus. During the time he was being terminated, he filed the lawsuit in Jordan against the two men.

The University of Iowa will provide a defense for both men if it is necessary.

Rothman left his position at UI to take on a very prestigious job as dean of the medical school at John Hopkins University.
