Iowa City Store Selling Tobacco Without License

An Iowa City store owner faces charges after he has been accused of selling tobacco to an underage customer without asking for identification, according to a post on kcrg.com.

An investigation led to discover that the owner himself did not even have a valid license to be selling tobacco in the state of Iowa in the first place.

Iowa City Police report that Alsafa Market, owned by 45-year old Nasrel Ahmed-Ibrahim, has been selling tobacco products to a 17-year-old customer without first obtaining the customer's identification to determine if he was of age to be purchasing tobacco.

According to the report, compliance checks on December 19 turned up the results that he had sold tobacco without obtaining valid identification from a customer, but also some other results as well.

All locations that sell tobacco are required to obtain identification for any and all customers that purchase tobacco products, as it is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to purchase tobacco products of any kind.

An investigation spurred from the incident, and police discovered that Ahmed-Ibrahim himself did not have the proper license in order to be selling tobacco. This license has to be obtained from the Director of the Alcoholic Beverages Division in Iowa.

Ahmed-Ibrahim faces charges for selling tobacco in his convenience store without the correct license to do so.

Findings discovered that Ahmed-Ibrahim also has a second location outside of Iowa City, but no records have shown if any investigation was launched on that establishment as of yet.

Ahmed-Ibrahim has no previous criminal history in Iowa.
