The bill to pay for the Iowa City landfill fire that occurred over six months ago has yet to be covered by the insurance provider, according to recent reports from the city.
The Iowa City landfill fire that started over six moths ago cost the city over $5 million to extinguish the fire and rebuild the landfill.
According to the revenue and risk manager for the city, the insurance company contacted the city Monday asking for some additional information about the extinguishing and rebuilding efforts. The city provided it to the insurance company two days later.
The landfill fire that started over six months ago burned a large portion of the 7.5-acre landfill and much of the lining around it that was made of tires. It also created a dangerous and flammable runoff.
Originally, the fire was going to be allowed to burn out, but it did not do so after more than two weeks, so measures had to be taken to help extinguish the fire. The cleanup process lasted two months long after officials found that the fire was still burning below the surface of the ashes.
The city has plans submitted to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources for reconstruction of the landfill that was damaged during the fire. If the plans are approved, the reconstruction is set to begin in spring of 2013.
Actions will also be taken to prevent future fires in the landfill from starting up again.
City officials have no idea whether the bill will be covered by the insurance company right now. The insurance company has not given a completion date for their investigation. They have only stated that they will complete the investigation soon.
