Iowa City Superintendent Responds to Conneticut Shooting

In response to the Conneticut shooting that occurred recently, the Superintendent of the Iowa City School Districts has issued a letter yesterday.

It was written in an attempt to give comfort to those affected by the tragedy and advice to parents that may be worried for the safety of their children.

According to an article released on the Iowa City Patch website, the letter reads as follows:

"Dear ICCSD parents:

We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred in Connecticut yesterday.  No doubt there will be extensive coverage of this on the news and much discussion about it in our homes and communities in the coming days.  I want to assure you that the safety of our students is our top priority and that each building has a comprehensive crisis plan in place to help avoid tragedies such as this. The plan is reviewed and updated annually.

Below and on the district website are some excellent tips from the National Association of School Psychologists.  Additional resources are available here (http://www.nasponline.org/resources/crisis_safety/index.aspx) to help your children cope with news such as this and to help you answer their questions.  Please know that Guidance Counselors and Mental Health Case Managers will be available to support students in school on Monday and through the rest of the week.   Please contact your child’s school with any concerns that you may have, or if you would like your child to meet with a mental health professional.

Superintendent Steve Murley"

The letter will hopefully help parents feel comfortable sending their children to schools in the Iowa City area.
