Iowa City May Ban Plastic Bags

Iowa City may be making some big changes for the environment, according to a recent announcement.

The City Council of Iowa City has placed consideration of a ban on plastic bags in Iowa City on the schedule.

The issue of banning plastic bags has been brought to the City Council many times before. The reasons for the question have been environmental. According to many groups, plastic grocery bags are very harmful to the environment.

Plastic bags have a variety of negative effects on the environment. They get thrown away and take up a large amount of space in landfills. If they are burned, they emit a toxic gas into the air. They can also get thrown or blown around by wind and be potentially harmful to animals and plants.

The group that most recently took up the issue of plastic grocery bags and brought it to the City Council is called 100 Grannies for a Livable Future. This is a group made of elderly women focusing on environmental issues.

The issue has been brought up to promote the use of reusable bags instead of plastic ones.

Opinions on the issue are split. Some believe that the ban is not at all necessary. These people state that it is enough to promote recycling and educate people about the negative effect of plastic grocery bags on the environment. They believe the focus should be on increasing recycling options for Iowa City instead.

Supporters of the ban believe that, if it passes, the ban should be pursued on a larger scale than just Iowa City. This will help Iowa City retailers avoid being at a disadvantage because of the lack of availability of plastic grocery bags.

The City Council will be discussing the ban this coming Tuesday.
