Normally, Black Friday is a holiday that is about saving and spending money on Christmas gifts. The mad rush, though, was a different type of day for some Wal-Mart employees in Iowa City.
Some Wal-Mart employees gathered outside the store in the early afternoon on Black Friday with signs to strike and protest, according to an article on the Iowa City Patch website.
Employees decided to strike on Black Friday due to the low wages that employees are being paid.
According to the Iowa City patch website, the average Wal-Mart employee makes only $8.81 per hour. This is not enough to live on, as many Wal-Mart employees have learned. So, the employees are trying to stand up and get some recognition.
There were only about15 employees outside of the Iowa City Wal-Mart in involved in the afternoon protest.
Wal-Mart issued a press release stating that they had the best Black Friday ever because of starting at around 8 p.m. Thursday night. This reinforced the fact that the strike did not really affect the sales overall.
The protest in Iowa City was part of a larger set of protests that were staged all across the nation by Wal-Mart employees. As many as 46 states contained Wal-Mart employees that were involved in the protests.
Unusually enough, this was not the only Black Friday protest staged this year in Iowa City. Inside, some of the pet owners protested the sale of a type of treats that have been linked to deaths of animals.
