Two Men Involved in Fatal Shootout To Be Tried at Federal Level

Two of the three individuals involved in the officer-shooting in August will not be facing charges at the county court level, according to kcrg.com. Instead, they will be facing charges at a federal level.

On August 16, an undercover drug deal went awry for two undercover police officers working with the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement at a trailer park outside of Iowa City. They were there to meet 24-year-old Ivan Hardemon.

The drug deal altered suspicions and Hardemon pulled a handgun, searching the two officers. Hardemon fatally shot one of the officers. Demarco Dudley was also hit with the shots fired. Hardemon died in the shootout.

John Mulbah and Norman Dudley, both 21, were originally given two charges for his involvement in the drug-related portion of the case. Mulbah was originally charged with five drug-related violations, and Dudley with two, both at county level.

The two men were indicted by the U.S. District Court this past Thursday and now face federal conspiracy to distribute and distribution charges of a controlled substance with a cocaine base.

The new charges faced are much more severe for both of the men, as the charges accuse them of conspiring on August 14 and August 17 to distribute a controlled substance. Mulbah also faces charges for August 10 and August 13. Both men face distribution charges for August 14.

In light of the federal charges, the state charges are dismissed for both men. They face federal court on January 7.

The third man arrested, 22-year-old Demarco Dudley, has not been indicted at the federal level and still faces county court for his charges. He was arrested in direct connection with the August 16 fatal shooting.

Demarco Dudley faces a charge of first-degree robbery. His trial is set for February 5.
