Iowa City is saying good-bye to one of its downtown bars that may actually be turned into an office space if things work out, according to an article on kcrg.com.
Field House Investments has decided to take on the project of turning what was Downtown Iowa's 3rd Base Sports Bar at 111 E. College Street into an office space.
Field House previously operated the bar that has been shut down, and the building has not been used since July of this year.
Field House Investments plans to convert the building's three floors into offices and retail space.
Of course, this renovation will take some work and money - a total of over 2 and a half million dollars in money. Field House Investments has asked the city to help out with this in the form of $800,728 in financing.
The city is not quite ready to hand out $800,000, but they are considering $400,000 for the project. They do support the opening of different business instead of bars. This could be a step in the right direction for the city.
Field House Investments may leave the space as a bar if they are unable to afford the remodeling of the building, but has promised not to do so with a grant from the city. The bar would be an issue because it has not been a bar in a while and the laws concerning bars in downtown Iowa City have changed.
The City Council will discuss the request at a meeting on November 19.
