The recently-resigned University of Iowa athletics department counselor who was at the center of a recent sex scandal at the University of Iowa has brought scrutiny to the school officials who rehired him for his second stint in 2002.
William Hines of the Presidential Committee on Athletics at the University of Iowa has been questioned about his decision to rehire Peter Gray to advise and counsel student athletes once again after leaving the school in 1995.
Hines stands by his decision, stating that Gray beat the other applicants because he had stronger qualifications for the job than they did.
Peter Gray resigned last week in the middle of a sexual harassment investigation by police. Allegations were presented that he had touched students. Claims of his unprofessional acts and violations dated all the way back before his original term end in 1995.
Because of this, questions have come about regarding the decision to rehire Gray as part of the University staff.
The Iowa Board of Regents and the University of Iowa President herself are all reviewing the entire situation, including the decision to re-hire Gray.
Hines himself confirms that he inquired about the situation and that the decision was done correctly., and that nothing was known of the allegations at the time of Gray's first departure. He states that Gray left for a promotion only.
Despite the allegations, University of Iowa saw students making record-breaking academic achievements. Hines said that Gray was a great counselor who was very good at his job.
According to an article on the Washington Post Website, Hines said that Gray is devastated by what has happened with his career and has not communicated with anyone since his resignation.
Gray himself has been unreachable.
