The chickens have made it through their first step of the process, according to an article on woi-tv.com.
The proposal to create laws allowing people to have backyard chickens in Iowa City has made it through the first step of the process during the recent Iowa City Council meeting.
The law was awarded initial approval with the Iowa City Council by a 5-2 vote for the portions that were voted on Tuesday at the meeting.
The first part of the voting was about a zoning ordinance to allow for buildings and structures to be used as chicken coops in the city limits. This passed the voting process.
The other portion of the voting was targeted specifically to the rules that would go into effect about people keeping chickens in their backyards. There were many proposals in this area.
The proposals about backyard chicken regulations included limiting the amount of hens allowed in a yard to four and not allowing roosters. They also included a law that would prohibit selling eggs and slaughtering chickens.
In order for a person to have chickens in Iowa City, they would have to apply for a permit.
All of these passed during the first reading, but they will have to pass through two readings with the City Council in order to actually go into effect.
Not all of the proposals were approved during the first Iowa City Council meeting, though. A requirement for people to get permission of their neighbors in order to have the chickens is still being debated.
