It may seem unusual for a significant discussion in Iowa to involve chickens, but this is something that has recently come up, and Iowa has said yes to backyard chickens in the city.
The debate about backyard chickens has been many years in the making. It has come up several times and been discussed on and off, with enough interest on both sides.
Tuesday, the issue was addressed once again by the City Council. They planned to give consideration on the first of two laws regarding the backyard chickens in the city.
The first ordinance involved an amendment that would allow people to use buildings and the construction of chicken coops.
The second ordinance to be considered will deal with the issue of the particular rules regarding the keeping of backyard chickens in the city.
There are already some regulations in place regarding chickens within the city limits. Rules state that no more than four hens can be kept, and no roosters can be kept at all. The chickens can only be kept in the backyards of single family homes, meaning that no apartment buildings will be allowed to have chickens still.
There is also a requirement for a permit to keep the chickens, and the neighbors that are applying for the permit are required to inform their neighbors that they will be keeping chickens.
The issue is finally being addressed after three years of proposals and requests. In 2009, several hundred people took action and signed a petition requesting the city allow backyard chickens.
The council did not consider it in 2009, but has finally decided to act on the requests of the people.
