Iowa Court Official Issued False Marriage License

A Florida man has spoken out against an Iowa Court official, according to a recent article on bradenton.com. According to the article, he has stated that the court official led he and his partner to purchase an invalid marriage license.

28-year old Joab Penney recently learned his marriage license that he obtained from Iowa in February was false. He was seeking a divorce only to find that the Iowa official had duped him into purchasing the license.

He purchased the license from Grundy County deputy clerk Brigitte Van Nice. According to the report, she informed them that they could purchase the license in the state without needing to come to Iowa.

The couple paid over $150 for the ceremony and license, which included forged signatures after contacting the Grundy County Courthouse. Florida does not allow same-sex marriages.

The couple split and Penney attempted to file for a divorce in Florida, only find out that the license was not valid. The documents included a hand written note with the license application materials.

Iowa does allow out-of-state couples to be married, but requires that they come to the state for a ceremony with two witnesses. Penney noted that this is representative of the long list of marital problems that gay couples face.

Van Nice was arrested. Shefaces two counts of forgery and one of perjury. Her attorney said she plans to plead not guilty to the charges she faces when she appears in court.
