"Binders of Women"

The debate is over, but the post-debate buzz is just beginning. The talk this time is about women, according to an article in the Chicago Sun Times.

One issue that is not being brought to the front of the debate involved women's employment. They face an extensive amount of obstacles in employment even today, but it has not been discussed much as of yet.

That all came to light with a choice word from Mitt Romney that essentially put a single word title to the argument: binders.

The question that led to this was regarding the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, Obama's first law as president, which supported equal pay for women. Just as the Romney campaign has done from the beginning, he attempted to avoid the question.

Katherine Fenton proposed the question regarding the workplace situation where women make only 72% of what men make at the same jobs.

This time, he referred to his record for hiring women in his cabinet during his time as the Massachusetts governor, in a statement about having "whole binders full of women."

The Obama campaign may have just been able to regain the female support on which his campaign was depending due to Romney's blunder, in addition to the mocking media craze that came about quickly after the statement. Even attempts at distractions have not worked thus far.

Despite the laughter, the Obama campaign has not failed to draw attention to the fact that Romney is in fact avoiding a very important question about his views on women in the workplace. This could hurt Romney's campaign.

Even though the discussion of women has been a bit on the back burner, it is a very important one in both campaigns, and will possibly have a great impact on who wins election. The Obama campaign has been promoting no-cost contraceptives for women and abortion rights, while the Romney campaign has been opposing them.

The final debate will be held in Boca Raton.
