Traffic Stop Leads to Charges

A traffic stop on October 6 led to a series of misdemeanor charges for an Iowa City man after a handgun was discovered in his vehicle.



25-year-old Thomas Anderson of Iowa City was pulled over on October 6. Officers were dispatched to the scene at 1900 Keokuk Street when it was discovered that he had a gun.

Anderson was ordered to exit the vehicle during the traffic stop when officers were able to see a handgun under the passenger seat. It was said to be in plain sight from the rear passenger-side window without searching the vehicle.

The gun was retrieved during a search of the vehicle after Anderson was ordered out of the vehicle. The handgun was discovered to be loaded with a full magazine and had a round chambered.

The vehicle search uncovered a box of ammunition in the trunk and another tray of ammunition in the front passenger seat. A small bag of a substance that appeared to be marijuana was in the center console, as well as a pipe with what looked to be burnt marijuana.

According to the police report, Anderson himself was searched as well. He was found to have another full magazine in his pocket.

Anderson was given a breath test as well, as he allegedly showed red, bloodshot eyes and smelled of alcohol. The test resulted in a reading of 0.176.

Anderson faces many misdemeanor charges. They include possession of drug paraphernalia, operating a vehicle while intoxicateed, possession of a controlled substance, and carrying weapons.
