Iowa City Bus Driver Arrested after Accident

An Iowa City bus driver was arrested on Monday after allegedly causing a motorcycle accident last week and leaving the scene.



35-year-old Jamar D. Collins of Cedar Rapids is accused of causing an a motorcycle accident in Iowa City near the intersection of Upland Avenue and Court Street. Then, the bus driver left the scene without checking on the driver of the motorcycle.

According to thegazette.com, the Iowa City police said that Collins failed to fully stop at a sign and yield to right of way around 2:30 on September 11. He turned in front of a motorcycle that was headed toward the intersection.

According to the police report by an officer, the motorcycle driver attempted to avoid the collision, but lost control as a result and crashed his motorcycle. Collins allegedly stopped the bus to watch the motorcycle crash, but did not check on the driver of the motorcycle.

He instead left the scene without either contacting the police or checking on the injured driver. The motorcycle was injured, but experienced only minor injuries. He declined being taken to the hospital.

Collins was arrested on Monday, but released from Johnson County Jail. He could not be reached for comment.

Collins was a full-time bus driver with Iowa City since October 2004. According to records, Collins had a "poor" rating on his 2004 job application and a history of 11 driving violations, most of which were minor. He had four in the three years prior to his application.

He should not have been able to be driving for the city according to their policies.
