Wahls Joins "Yes on Retention"

Iowa City's own outspoken gay marriage activist Zach Wahls joins the Hawkeyes for the "Yes on Retention" campaign for this year. The campaign is to support retention of four Iowa Supreme Court judges that are up this year for the decision.

There are four Supreme Court Justices this year that are up for retention: David Wiggins, Thomas Waterman, Edward Mansfield, and Bruce Zager. Wiggins was on the Court in 2009 when they ruled in support of same sex marriage.

The "Yes on Retention" campaign has been created in support of these judges because of Wiggins. They will all be up for retention in November so that what happened in 2010 does not happen again.

In 2010, three justices were booted from the court after voters failed to vote for retention. These three justices participated in the 2009 decision to legalize same sex marriage.

They were eliminated from the Iowa Supreme Court due to outside campaigns against them and the lack of voters that actually remembered to vote for the retention of these justices, which were listed at the bottom of the ballot.

Zach Wahls has joined the campaign and spoken out against the campaigns that may go against the justices up for retention this year so that Iowa natives will vote to keep them as part of the Court.

He spoke yesterday at the Hawkeyes game. Even though the reception was not as great as he would have liked, Wahls is confident that the message was received and will be remembered this November.
