Lalla Waives Right to Speedy Trial

The trial for Miranda Lalla, the Iowa City woman accused of running over and killing her friend in June, has been rescheduled recently as she waived her right to a speedy trial.

50 year-old Lalla was set to face trial for vehicular homicide after running over her friend, 44-year-old Pamela Gross on the evening of June 17 after the two got into a fight. The incident happened a little after 7 p.m. that evening.

According to reports, the two friends were at a bar and returned to Lalla's house just a few blocks away from the bar not long after 7 p.m. The two began to fight and it turned physical quickly. It led to Lalla unintentionally knocking down and running over her friend with a Dodge Ram truck.

Lalla admitted to having a few beers when she spoke to police, but it was discovered that she was under the influence of drugs and crack cocaine. A field sobriety test discovered her to have a blood alcohol level of .093. A search turned up several items with drug residue on them.

Witnesses also reported that Lalla went into her apartment and changed clothes after hitting her friend with the truck, something to which she later admitted, stating that she ripped her dress during the argument with her friend.

The new trial date set for Lalla is November 6. Her last pretrial conference is set for October 26. If convicted for vehicular homicide, she can get up to 50 years in prison.
