Yesterday, law enforcement was locked in a four-hour standoff with suspects in an undercover drug encounter the night before. Two of the suspects in connection with the case were arrested, one other man was injured, and one was killed.
An undercover drug encounter the night prior had led officers to the apartment building, where suspect John Mulbah was hiding. At 7:15 p.m. yesterday evening, according to the Des Moines Register website, Mulbah barricaded himself in the apartment.
They led him out about fifteen minutes later uninjured and took him to the Johnson County Jail, but leads on the case took them elsewhere as well.
Officials moved on to a mobile home in Breckenridge Trailer Court, which is east of Iowa City, and a shootout ensued there. It has not been said who shot first, but a 24 year old man identified as Ivan Hardemon was killed, according to officials. Authorities suspect he died of a gunshot wound, but autopsy results have not come back as of yet.
A man who named himself as park manager informed authorities that Hardemon was not a resident in the park. His actual residence is unknown. He has served time in prison in Illinois for violent crimes and has been charged with assault and harassment in Johnson County.
Demarco Dudley was also injured in the shootout. No information about him or his injuries was released. He was treated at the University of Iowa Hospitals. It is believed that Dudley's brother, Norman, who is also involved in the case, dropped him off near another park. An ambulance headed to the shooting picked him up to provide treatment.
Another suspect in the case, Norman Dudley, has not been located. Nothing can be said about how the suspects are connected to the undercover incident or the case, but charges will be filed.
Six officers were involved in the investigation. Two of the state Division of Narcotics Enforcements agents involved are on paid administrative leave. Officials say placing the agents on administrative leave is standard procedure.
