During the Olympics on Wednesday night, there was an update in Iowa City showing a surveillance video displaying a white van and what could have been a connection to the case of the missing Iowa cousins. It did not turn out this way, though.
Mike Knief, 34, saw the news alert when he was watching the Olympics and noticed his family's business van and a photo of himself on a surveillance video at a Casey's convenience store the day the two girls disappeared.
Knief immediately contacted authorities to talk with them about the news alert that was broadcasted, but failed to contact them by phone. He ended up going directly to the police department and being interviewed by the Iowa FBI and Evansdale authorities.
According to a statement given by authorities on kwwl.com, Knief was cooperative and is not viewed as a suspect in the disappearance. He states that he had just gone into the store to pay for gas. He did not have any useful information to provide for the investigation.
The investigation is nearing three weeks, and authorities are trying every single lead that they can get. An attempted abduction not far away in a white van had been reported, which led to the broadcast. Knief states that he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Authorities are continuing their investigation and continuing to look for anything that they can find relating to the investigation. Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact authorities in Evansdale.
