After an astonishing amount of time, the landfill fire in Iowa City is still burning, even though the flames cannot be seen at this point.
The Iowa City landfill caught fire on May 26 after a load was brought in that has been believed to start the fire. It has been burning since that point, even after many attempts to contain and extinguish it.
The fire burned much of the 7.5 acre landfill over the two months that it has been going on. It is predicted that the fire will cost about $4 million to $6 million in damages, including the lining of the landfill itself being burned.
There is a clay layer, deposited in June, that has been used in an attempt to extinguish the flames. Even though it may appear that the clay has put out the fire, the waste is still burning underneath the clay.
Another flare up in the fire occurred about two weeks ago when the clay cover was opened up in order to do some work on the landfill that was still burning. This waste that is now burning has not been deemed as hazardous, though. Instead, it is harmless and can be disposed of right on the landfill.
It is estimated that the landfill fire will be completely out by fall and the reconstruction to repair the damage that has been done will start in spring. It is predicted that the landfill will be restored by the end of summer, according to thegazette.com.
