Iowa Quaker Oats Workers Claim Powerball Winnings

There was quite a bit of excitement surrounding the winning ticket that had not been claimed for the Iowa City Powerball drawing earlier this month, but that excitement has shifted.

20 workers at the Iowa City Quaker Oats Plant have decided to split $241 million in winnings that they have earned from the ticket that was purchased.

According to mercurynews.com, 18 of the 20 workers came to a lottery headquarters and demanded their privacy in addition to claiming their winnings. The group announced Wednesday that they would be starting a court case in order to prevent the release of their last names to the public.

One member of the group bought the ticket at the previously disclosed HyVee location on June 13 and agreed to split it 20 ways with the other workers involved. When they claimed the winnings, they decided on the lump sum option, which awarded them a total of a little over $160 million.

Several of the workers that were part of the winning group stated that they plan to retire immediately from the factory.

According to the case, the group has formed a trust called the Shipping 20 and pursued a case that will prohibit the release of their names. This was done, according to the man that purchased the ticket, to avoid people knocking on their doors for money, as can happen.

The lottery is displeased with the case because they argue that the winner's names should be made public. They have given leave for the group to pursue the case, though, before they release last names.

This is the first time an Iowa Lottery winner has taken legal action to keep their name a private matter.
