Yes, it is that time of the year again. Iowa City's annual Pride events have begun. Concerts and other events are scheduled all the way through until Sunday.
Iowa City's annual Pride events are part of National Gay and Lesbian Month. Every year during this month, the city holds events specifically targeted to celebrate gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals that are in the area.
According to the Des Moines Register website, the theme for this year's Pride festival is "Changing Minds Together," which is perfect for Iowa's recent equality campaigns.
This year's schedule is packed for events. Wednesday started it off with an evening concert at The Lounge. Thursday followed with two drag king shows hosted by the Iowa City kings that night.
Friday evening takes it to the park with food, beverages and live entertainment. This event, called the Iowa City Pride's "Picnic in the Park" is completely open and free to the public.
The annual Parade and Pride Festival are actually set for Saturday. The festival will follow the Parade and will feature just as much to see as the parade this year.
It is also believed that "Voice" contestant Beverly McLellen will be at the festival this year to perform. The openly gay singer took second on the first season of "The Voice" as part of Christina Aguilera's Team.
Iowa's own Zach Wahls, who has been campaigning for equality in Iowa, will be signing autographs as well.
Iowa City invites you to come out and celebrate equality with them again this year any time through Sunday.
