Iowa City School District Alters Menu for Lettuce Recall

The Iowa City School District is pulling all of the lettuce that is to be included in the rest of the menus for lunches for the rest of the year because of a recent recall on lettuce by the manufacturer.

According to CBSnews.com, River Ranch foods has issued a voluntary recall of some of its bagged lettuce after the Food and Drug Administration discovered bacteria in some of them. Various specific brands of lettuce produced by this same company have been pulled from shelves.

The recall was voluntary, and the Food and Drug Administration has not been involved at all. Still, the Iowa City School District felt the need to respond to the recall in order to be safe for the remaining school year so that no students get sick due to the lettuce being served.

It is very rare for children to develop any sort of illness from eating anything containing the Listeria virus that was discovered in the lettuce, but no chances are being taken on the subject.

All Iowa City Schools are removing lettuce from their remaining school menus as a choice for the students and replacing them with other foods when necessary in order to make sure that no students will get sick.

A warning has been issued, though, because some of the lettuce was already served to some of the students on a few days in different schools before knowledge came about of the recall. No students should be in danger of being sick, but the schools are advising parents to keep an eye on their children for a while.
