29-year old Paris N. Toomer is being charged with going armed with intent, public intoxication and criminal mischief after threatening a group of people with a steak knife. She is also being accused of slashing a tire, but this has yet to be confirmed.
Iowa City Police responded to a call of a fight in progress at nearly 1 a.m. to find Toomer swinging a steak knife aggressively toward a group of people. The others involved in the incident have not been identified, and only Toomer was taken into custody this morning.
Police performed a breath test on Toomer upon the arrest after the incident and discovered that she had a blood alcohol level of .107, which led to the public intoxication charge that she received. She admitted to drinking before the incident and willingly cooperated with the test being performed.
There is no definite answer regarding the accusations that Toomer slashed a tire as of yet, but she is being charged already with the crimes relating to the incident with the steak knife.
According to Toomer, she was defending herself and her family after someone else in the group had pulled a gun on her and threatened her. She said she left and returned with the steak knife to defend herself, being unafraid to die in order to protect her family.
Until now, there is no evidence of a gun being pulled and no gun was found on the scene. Further investigation on the topic has not turned up any reports.
