Board of Regents Backs Up UI Paying President's Spouse

The University of Iowa is the only one of three different colleges that have the President's spouse on the payroll, even though this is officially believed to be an actual, credible job worthy of pay.

The University of Iowa has worked out a deal with Ken Mason, the husband of its president Sally Mason. Ken Mason has two different jobs associated with the school. One of these jobs is called a "presidential fundraiser" and brings in over $50,000 a year. The other job is a lecturer in the biology department at the school.

Sally Mason herself claims the deal was made with the Iowa Board of Regents, as the pay is their policy. But, according to those on the board and those that hired her, this is not the case. The former president says that he made the deal himself with the president.

Craig Lang, the current president of the Board of Regents, would not comment on the Board's involvement in the arrangement, but he stated that the duties of being a president's spouse are fundraiser duties equal to that of a job, so he should be on the payroll for what he does.

Sally Mason herself has expressed disappointment that the legitimacy of her husband's pay should be brought into question since she has been working at the university for five years under the same terms.

Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa both have presidents with spouses, but neither of them have opted to put the spouse on the payroll as of yet. They seem to disagree on the Board's policy.
