University of Iowa Student Protests Size Discrimination

After University of Iowa Student Jordan Ramos was recently told that she was not allowed to dance on the platform at Iowa City's Union Bar, she has taken the fight to the public. She announced that the incident occurred, and recently took the fight to a protest on the streets against size discrimination.

Over 30 people gathered with Ramos yesterday to protest size discrimination. The goal was to peacefully help gain awareness about the reality of the situation, stating that it is much larger than the practices of a single bar.

The issue of the situation was originally the practices of the bar itself after a bouncer told Ramos she could not dance on the platform. The focus changed, according to Ramos, after the bar owner apologized and the platform was ordered to be taken down.

The issue changed for Ramos to something that she believes to be much more important. She aims to take the attention away from herself and her experience, allowing other people to join in her cause, which she calls size discrimination.

She wants people to realize that this is in fact an issue that deserves to be discussed. She believes she needs to help bring the issue to light because unlike other forms of discrimination, size discrimination is not protected by any laws.

The protest has given rise to an extensive amount of negative feedback, which surprises Ramos. Many people believe that her awareness goals are promoting obesity. Ramos argues that she is not at all doing this. She says that she just wants to be treated fairly and not negatively because of her appearance.
