Last night, several severe thunderstorms ripped through the state of Iowa and much of the Midwest, doing some damage in the process. Washington and Johnson counties in Iowa were both hit by the damage.
The worst of the storm hit roughly 30 miles south of Iowa City, damaging two homes in Wayland. The damage was reported to have occurred a little after 9 p.m. on Thursday night, according to records.
3229 Spruce Avenue and 3205 Spruce Avenue were both hit by damage from the storm. The residents at 3229 made reports of the damage being caused by debris from a tornado. They reported being blocked inside their home from it.
The nearby towns of Noble and Crawfordsville also received some damage from the storm chain, though theirs was much less specific. No homes were severely damaged in these towns, but there was still significant destruction.
The damage done by the storms included water, debris and downed power lines in large amounts. Flash flood warnings were out because of the amount of heavy rain that lasted for hours.
The strong winds caused significant damage as well. Trees and power lines were both extensively damaged. Nearly 2,700 people lost power during the storms. There was also a significant amount of damage from hail as well. Some of the hail was estimated to be golf ball sized.
Tornadoes throughout the area were claimed, but they were not confirmed. There were reports of tornadoes by residents in Wayland and Crawfordsville, and the Washington County Sheriff's office even reported damage from what they presumed to be a tornado.
