Iowa City Farmers Market Closes for 2011

The Iowa City farmers market held its final market of 2011 Saturday. Located on the ground level of the Chauncey Swan Parking Ramp on East Washington Street, the farmers market has long been a place for Iowa City farmers and artisans to sell their goods.

This year may have been the best year of the market yet. Dozens of vendor lined the parking ramp to sell all sorts of produce, crafts, jewelry, baked goods, and other delicacies. Being new to the area, I went to see what all the fuss was about, and I wasn’t disappointed.

The Iowa City farmers market is a dream for any food enthusiast and the perfect way to spend a Saturday morning. There are vendors selling breakfast and baked goods so you can get an excellent breakfast while you browse the crafts and fresh fruit and vegetables. Being a college student, I was impressed with the prices of the produce especially considering it’s all locally grown.

Although the fact that the market is held in a parking ramp does put a damper on the spirit of the event, I’m sure I would have been happy to be under its cover should it have been raining. I think people of all ages could appreciate what the market has to offer. Although the outdoor market is closed for the year, Iowa City will be holding a holiday market from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on November 12th and December 10th in the Robert A. Lee Community Recreation Center and Grant Wood Elementary School. Both locations will run two markets simultaneously.
